Pine Control at Spaniard Flat in Leatham Valley
Following our successful inaugural weekend in Feb 2012 clearing pines off Spaniard Flat in the Leatham Valley we asked DOC if we could erect a sign there. DOC agreed and provided and erected a sign in appreciation of our effort. Looks very smart but of course this means we will have to keep up the good work! If you are ever passing through the flat keep an eye out for seedlings - it only takes a moment to pull them out when small.
Damage to Stopbanks
Kevin McFall, Senior Rivers Engineering Officer with the Marlborough District Council, has contacted the Club about damage to stopbanks caused by 4WD activities and asks for the assistance of the club in preventing this.
These banks are the primary line of defence against flooding. To function properly they need to maintain a uniform profile and continuous grass cover. This is destroyed by 4WD activity such as that depicted in this photo supplied by Kevin.
While not suggesting that Club members are responsible he asks for our help in identifying offenders who are probably unaware of the damage they are causing and are "just having fun". As Kevin says "We do not want to be 'killjoys', but have a responsibility to the greater
community that the integrity of flood defences are intact."
So if you see anybody damaging stopbanks either have a quiet word with them about the damage they are doing both to the stopbanks and the reputation of offroaders, or let the Council know by contating David Aires (021 705 6538) or Kevin McFall (021)445 659 or by leaving information such as reg. nos. at the MDC reception marked for their attention.
Further information about the problem is contained in the following pdf files forwarded by Kevin.
NZFWDA Newsletter The Club is associated with the NZ Four Wheel Drive Association which provides us with a national voice as well as insurance cover for Club Activities. Periodically they publish a newsletter "Trail Torque" informing member clubs of recent happenings. This is reproduced on this website in the "Password Required" section. The latest edition has information on the insurance cover for family members and invites members to apply for a fuel card (6c per litre discount).
DOC Certificate of Appreciation
Following the recent Department of Conservation Branch and Leatham 4wd Extravaganza which the club helped organise we have received a Certificate of Appreciation from DOC. This is a nice tribute to the effort members put into the day, thank you DOC.
